What Are Laser Treatments?

Laser hair removal is the process of hair removal by means of exposure to pulses of laser light that destroy the hair follicle.

Laser resurfacing is a treatment to reduce facial wrinkles and skin irregularities, such as blemishes or acne scars. The technique directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, precisely removing skin layer by layer. This popular procedure is also called lasabrasion, laser peel, or laser vaporization.

How Laser Hair Removal Is Performed?

Laser hair removal usually requires two to six treatments. On areas where hair grows quickly, such as the upper lip, the treatment might be repeated in four to eight weeks. On areas of slow hair growth, such as the back, it can be every 12 to 16 weeks.

Dr Kapadia presses a hand-held laser instrument to your skin.
Once activated, the laser beam passes through your skin to the hair follicles.
The intense heat damages the follicles, inhibiting hair growth.
There might be slight discomfort due to the warmth, but Dr Kapadia also provides a cooling device or gel.

Treating a small area like the upper lip, the procedure takes only a few minutes. Treating an area as large as the back might take more than an hour.

How Laser Skin Resurfacing Is Performed?

The two types of lasers used in laser resurfacing are carbon dioxide (CO2) and erbium.

CO2 laser resurfacing (fractionated CO2) uses very short pulsed light energy (known as ultrapulse) or continuous light beams. These are delivered in a pattern that removes thin layers of skin with minimal heat damage. Recovery can take up to two weeks.
Erbium laser resurfacing removes surface-level and moderately deep lines and wrinkles. One of its main benefits is minimal burning of surrounding tissue, which results in much fewer side effects and a faster recovery. The side effects are limited to swelling, bruising and redness. Recovery may only take one week. Additionally, erbium laser skin resurfacing may work better for darker skin.

The entire procedure can take between 30 minutes to a few hours, depending on the amount of resurfacing needed.

How Is Recovery After Laser Treatment?

You might notice redness and swelling for the first few hours after laser hair removal. Apply ice to the treated area and use an SPF30+ sunscreen daily. You shed hair over the next few days or weeks. Laser hair removal can last for several months.

After the laser procedure, the treated area is bandaged. You will need to clean the treated area four to five times a day after the first day. Then you’ll need to apply an ointment to prevent scabs from forming. The areas generally heal in 10 to 21 days. The results continue getting better, and you can use makeup to cover up the initial pinkness.
