Your Ultimate Guide to Breast Augmentation with Breast Implants

Breast Augmentation

What Is Breast Augmentation?

All women dream of having proportionate, symmetrical, and perfectly shaped breasts. However, that is not the case always as many women have small breasts that are often disproportionate to their body size. This may make them feel unhappy, dissatisfied with their self-image, and desperate for a solution to get bigger, fuller, and more attractive breasts. For such problems, breast augmentation surgery is the perfect and safe solution.

Breast augmentation (also known as augmentation mammoplasty or “boob job”) is a cosmetic surgery that enhances the size, shape, and overall appearance of the breasts.

The Reasons For Small Breasts:

  • Genetics: Most of the time, breast size depends on the genes or is hereditary. Women with a family history of small breasts tend to have small breasts as well.
  • Hormonal Imbalance: After the family history, breast size depends mostly on the hormones in the body. A lack of estrogen and progesterone (the main hormones for size) are mainly responsible for underdeveloped breasts.
  • Medical Conditions: Congenital conditions like Poland syndrome or Turner syndrome can also be a cause of small breasts. One may also suffer through Pediatric Breast Hypoplasia, which is one’s dissatisfaction with her breasts due to psychosocial issues and a medical term for women’s postpubertal underdeveloped breasts or abnormal smallness of breast tissues. This condition may be a congenital or acquired defect associated with underlying abnormalities of the pectoral muscle, related to trauma, or it may be a more subjective aesthetic description.

Whatever the reason may be, breast augmentation surgery is the right solution if you do not want to have small boobs and deal with all the issues that come with them anymore.

How Can Breast Augmentation Help You?

In today’s society, women feel a lot of pressure to have the “perfect” chest size with boobs that have the “perfect” shape and lift. A lot of women feel insecure or uncomfortable with their bodies as a result of not reaching up to these expectations. Women who are unhappy with their breasts can choose breast augmentation as a way of improving their self-esteem as it helps to acquire a body that is more attractive and alluring. The results of breast augmentation can help one feel more confident, self-assured, and powerful.

If you are considering getting breast augmentation surgery with implants, it is essential to have all the information about breast implants as well to make an informed decision and have realistic expectations from the surgery. So, let’s take a look at different types of implants and their pros & cons.

Types Of Breast Implants:

Breast Implants have an outer shell and a filling material in them. Each implant has its pros and cons and so the selection of the type of implant comes down to personal preference.

  1. Saline Implants: These implants have silicone shells filled with sterile salt water. In case of a leak, the shell will collapse and the saline will be naturally absorbed and expelled by the body. Saline implants provide a uniform shape, firmness, and feel. As these implants can be filled with different amounts of solution, the size and shape of an implant can be determined subjectively.
  2. Traditional Silicone Implants: These implants have a silicone outer shell and are filled with silicone gel. If a silicone-filled implant leaks, the gel will stay in the shell or may escape into the breast implant pocket. These leaking implants may or may not collapse. After getting these implants, it is mandatory to go through periodic monitoring. Silicone implants tend to feel more natural than saline implants.

Breast Implant Shapes:

After selecting the type of implant, the next step is to choose the shape. There are two basic types of implant shapes:

  • Round Shaped Implants: Breast implants with round shapes are the most popular because they provide fuller, rounder breasts with considerable size increase. They have a symmetrical shape which gives the breasts the same level of fullness. As these implants are round, there is less possibility for them to move or rotate out of the breast pockets. These implants give high projection, aesthetic results and are preferred by women with narrow breasts.
  • Form-Stable or Gummy Bear Implants (Tear Shaped): These implants have a silicone shell and a silicone gel filling. Unlike traditional silicone implants, these implants have thicker consistency of a gel and also have several layered, strong, and durable silicone shells to prevent gel bleeding. Hence, these are also known as cohesive breast implants. Teardrop-shaped implants look more natural as they have a gentle-sloping contour. They have more volume at the bottom and taper towards the top. Gummy bear implants are firmer, hold the shape better, and more natural as well as softer to touch. They are also able to maintain the shape even after the implant collapses. These are only available as silicone implants as they require very thick gel in order to maintain their shape.

Breast Implant Sizes:

  • The first and most important thing to remember regarding breast implant size is that they are very different from cup size. Still, it’s important to keep your ideal cup size in mind while determining the implant size.
  • Implant sizes are measured in volume (either cubic centimeters or millimeters) and keep in mind, the larger the volume of the implant is, the more outward its projection will be. However, always take professional opinion as the risk of implant movement within the breast pocket increases if the volume of the implant is too large.
  • Another important factor in measuring implant size is the diameter, which is the width of the implant at its widest point. If the diameter is too wide, the implant will look too flat and will not project outwards. So, it is important to discuss the volume and diameter of the implants very carefully with the surgeon to make sure that they are balanced.

Breast Implant Textures:

Breast implants come in two basic textures:

  • Smooth: Smooth breast implants have thinner skin, which makes them feel softer. Smooth breast implants have soft, sleek, texture-less outer shells. These soft, smooth implants can move freely and naturally in the breast pocket and are available only in round shapes. These implants are quite popular as they provide the best natural, wholesome look and last longer when compared to textured implants.
  • Textured: These implants have a silicone rubber shell and a rough, textured surface. There are tiny particles of various sizes on the shell, which adhere to the tissue. The implant does not move inside the breast pocket because of its attachment to the tissue capsule. Textured implants are available in round and teardrop shapes. The texture of the implants can be felt when touched and is often compared to sandpaper.

Some Common Myths Surrounding Breast Augmentation And Breast Implants:

  • Myth #1: Breast Implants Cause Cancer: Fortunately, this misconception is false! There is no proven link between breast implants and breast cancer. But it is important to remember that betting breast implants will not reduce your chances of getting cancer either. So, remember to get regular check-ups with the doctor.
  • Myth #2: Breast Implants Make It Impossible To Breastfeed: Also false! Breast implants are placed under the mammary glands, and so they do not interfere with breastfeeding. However, if breast augmentation is combined with a breast lift, then there is a risk to the patient’s ability to breastfeed. That is why it is generally recommended to get a breast lift only after the period of breastfeeding, if necessary.
  • Myth #3: There Will Be A Long And Painful Recovery: This misconception is also not entirely true. Each woman’s body is unique, and so each patient has a unique recovery period, which can last from a week to 2-3 months. The pain varies from some to none, and any pain can easily be dealt with the prescribed painkillers.
  • Myth #4: Breast Implants Require Frequent Replacement: While it is true that breast implants are not meant to last forever, they do not need to be replaced very often. Depending on the type of implants and as long as they are not damaged, they may not need replacing for 10 years! Occasionally though, the implants do need to be replaced with implants of different sizes or shapes; but this is only in response to the changes in your body (which can occur with age, weight, or hormonal fluctuations), not implant deterioration.
  • Myth #5: Breast Implants Get In The Way Of Sports And Exercise: Breast implants do not get in the way of an active lifestyle at all. As long as you do not engage in strenuous physical activity in the postoperative period and wear appropriate supportive garments when you return to your regular exercise routine, your implants will not bother at all. However, it is important to discuss your lifestyle goals while selecting implants, as implants that are very large may put a lot of weight on the upper body.

Breast augmentation is a way to improve your self-confidence and self-image. It balances the breast contours and increases the fullness of your breasts. Breast augmentation is also used for the reconstruction of breasts after mastectomy or injuries. When selecting breast implants, it is essential to be well-informed about all the options and necessary information regarding them. To achieve the best comfort level post-surgery and satisfactory results, it is important to have an in-depth discussion regarding implants, their suitability as well as communicating your honest expectations and desires in detail with the surgeon. Then, breast augmentation will help you grow more comfortable and confident with yourself and your body.
