What Is Skin Cancer Removal And Giant Nevi Removal Surgery?
Skin cancer often follows an iceberg method. While cancer may not show too much on the surface, there may be a sizeable cancerous region underneath. On the surface, it may present as mild lesions and therefore not seem very dangerous. However, like any cancer, it requires immediate attention and removal.
Giant nevi are congenital moles that measure 20cm or more in size at birth. These moles have a higher chance of being malignant and resulting in skin cancer. Therefore, getting them removed as early as possible is necessary.

How Skin Cancer Removal And Giant Nevi Removal Surgery Is Performed?
Skin Cancer Removal –
Before removing the cancerous mass, Dr Abizer Kapadia administers anaesthesia for comfort. Depending on your needs, he chooses between local, intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia.
Following this, the size of the lesion matters. If you have a small or well-contained lesion, Dr Kapadia can remove this with a simple, surgical procedure.
Giant Nevi Removal –
The procedure is the same as the tissue expansion technique explained for the reconstruction stage. Other than tissue expansion, there are two techniques used for giant nevi removal:
- Serial excision: The removal of one portion of the lesion with primary closure of the wound followed by a similar additional surgery or surgeries to remove the remaining lesion. The patient heals between each surgical stage to reduce trauma.
- Excision and Grafting: The removal of most or all of the lesion and closure of the skin defect with a skin graft from the patient or with skin substitutes. Skin grafts can cause more significant scarring and may prolong post-op recovery time.
What Is Skin Cancer reconstruction?
Reconstructing the skin after cancer ensures a more aesthetic result. Especially if the cancer was on the face, the patient may find the large, resulting lesions undesirable. Since a plastic surgeon can also perform skin cancer removal, it is often combined with the reconstruction process for the best results.
What Is Tissue Expansion Technique?
The first method of reconstruction is by extending the non-cancerous tissue around the previously cancerous mass.
In this technique, healthy, adjacent tissue is repositioned over the wound. This is because local (or adjacent) flaps generally have the same colour and skin texture as the defect from the skin cancer surgery. They are a much better tissue match.
The suture line is positioned to follow the natural creases and curves of the face or body part, if possible, to make the resulting scar inconspicuous.
How Is Recovery After Skin Cancer Removal And Reconstruction?
Skin cancer removal and reconstruction can take several hours.
After your surgery, incision sites may be sore, red or drain small amounts of fluid. Ensure that you keep your incision sites clean and well protected from potential injury. Limiting movement prevents your wounds or sutures from opening. Consult with your surgeon about the kind of light activity you can do post-surgery.
Healing can continue for many weeks or months as incision lines improve. It can take a year or more for incision lines to refine and fade to some degree. Some patients may require secondary procedures to complete or refine reconstruction.
Sun exposure is not recommended so that an even pigmentation is maintained and your risk of contracting skin cancer again is minimal.
Gauze dressings or other types of bandages may be applied to the incisions. Elastic bandages or immobilizers help minimize swelling and prevent excessive movement during the healing process. Small, thin tubes may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid.
With the tissue expansion technique, the area may look abnormal for a short time. Often, several rounds of surgery may be necessary for the best results and maximum nevi removal. Dr Kapadia aims for the safest methods and most natural results so that any risk of cancer is minimized with the most natural-looking and aesthetic results possible.
What Are The Results?
During reconstruction, the main goal is creating natural-looking results. Returning your face to what it was exactly pre-cancer removal, is not possible. But Dr Kapadia aims to come as close as possible by following natural contours that hide scars better.
